The
City of Heroes game allowed players a lot of freedom in naming their
characters. Character names could be fairly long and contain spaces, dashes,
apostrophes, and likely a few other special characters (besides the standard
alphanumeric). Every character actually had two names, one individual name
and a global one. The global names began with the @ symbol (my two global
names were "@cohRock", for my main account, and "@Rod Fyre" for the free-to-play
account opened in Nov.2011). Anyone from any server could talk to you via
the global name. And if you were offline when the global message was sent,
it would be saved until your next character logs in.
I had a recognizable style in choosing names. More than one friend told me
that they suspected that a new character of mine was me, just from his name.
I often used a nerdy humor in choosing a name; consider Ram Yak,
Monstrous Monstress, or Hydroelectric Dan. Other
times there may not have been much creativity at all. He's going to be a
shield/fire tank? Name him Shyre, of course!
