Kodak Lossless True Color Image Suite

The pictures below link to lossless, true color (24 bits per pixel, aka "full color") images.  It is my understanding they have been released by the Eastman Kodak Company for unrestricted usage.  Many sites use them as a standard test suite for compression testing, etc.

Prior to this site, they were only available in the Sun Raster format via ftp.  This meant that the images could not be previewed before downloading.  Since their release, however, the lossless PNG format has been incorporated into all the major browsers.  Since PNG supports 24-bit lossless color (which GIF and JPEG do not), it is now possible to offer this browser-friendly access to the images.

Thank You, Kodak!    -- Rich Franzen

Disclaimer: The imagery with which I began was not in PhotoCD format, but 24-bit Sun Raster. For a year this page had a link to the source ftp address at Rensellaer Polytechnic Institute. When Rensellaer stopped their ftp distribution, I removed the link.  My conversion into PNG was lossless; the original conversion from PhotoCD was not, nor could it be.  "Lossless" on this page is used in comparison to what a GIF or JPEG conversion would have done to the data.

Request: I would like to provide information on each image page such as photographer, date, location, and a short description from Kodak.  If someone has this info, please share it and I will give you credit.  For now I've simply added a one line summary above each photo based solely on my impression of it.  -- rwf, 2010-10-28

Answered: 2012-10-28 -- I thank Doctor Bradley J. Lucier for providing exactly the information requested, and more.  See his PHOTO_CD subdirectory for this extra info, including the raw images in photo-cd (PCD) format.  I have added the specific information to each image page.  See PhotoCD_credits.txt for the source document from which this info was extracted.

Each image is either 768x512 or 512x768 in size.
(Originals were all 768x512, but I hate sideways images!)
